INTERVIEW

We asked Krista : Introduce yourself, talk about anything you want, your age, your country, how did your passion for travel begin, yours goals…?

She said: I am a keen bicycle traveller, originally from Latvia. I left my home country in 2010. I started my first cycle tour in 2016. It was a spontaneous unplanned trip for 100 days from Barcelona, Spain to North of Scotland, it was the start of my great bicycle adventures. I have always had passion for outdoors and have had curious nature. Curiosity to explore and learn about other places, cultures and traditions is what gives me the drive to keep pedalling.

Question: What is your goal of travel ?

She said:
Travel is my lifestyle. This is how I live. I want to explore other parts of the world, other people and myself. I like to travel with open mind and live through various experiences.

I usually travel on low budget, but ultimately it makes me feel the richest I’ve been in my life. These experiences can’t be measured in monetary value.

Question:  What are the difficulties you face ?

She said: Solo traveling as a woman provides more challenges and difficulties to overcome. I’ve been followed by men in cars, by motorbikes or on foot. These experiences makes me feel very unsafe. But luckily I experience more positive encounters than bad ones. I don’t want let the negative experiences stop me.
Travelling on low budget has its own challenges and difficulties too. Many times I do not know where I will sleep that night (I usually do not spend money on accommodation and try to find free places where to set up my tent), sometimes I feel extremely hungry as I don’t have much food. But these struggles help me to appreciate the whole experience, life and what I have a lot more.

Question: Is money an obstacle to financing the trip and how do you proceed ?

She said: Money of course is important to be able to travel. However, I spend very little money on my adventures and thus I don’t need much. I tend to work a few months a year planting trees in different countries to fund my travels. Tree planting is not only beneficial for my wallet but also good for mental and physical well-being and nature!
I have also written and published a book. I try to market that a little more to make some passive income while on road, but I need to get better at marketing.

Question: What are your dreams and plans for the future ?

She said: My only dream and plan is to continue travelling by bicycle. I never plan my next adventures, I just go with the flow. Wherever the circumstances and opportunities take me, I go and explore. I rarely do any prior research of places I visit. I like the discovery process.

Question: Can an adventurer carry a message of peace between peoples ?

She said: Absolutely they can. I think a nomad on a bicycle brings out the best in people across the world. I have been treated with unimaginable kindness in places I have travelled, people are curious, they want to help. It also helps others to realise that a different lifestyle is possible.
I also tend to do some small charity projects whenever I can, usually focusing on children from low income families and giving them equal opportunities. Bicycle travelling has helped me to make strong bond with people from various backgrounds, races, religions and cultures.

Question: I noticed that you carried the Palestinian flag on your trip, what does that mean to you? I am curious about that.

She said: For me it means standing with humanity. It is asking for peace. (I also carried Ukrainian flag/band tied to the handlebars of my bicycle that is not visible in the photos). I do not support war, violence, unnecessary suffering of anyone. It has nothing to do with races, religions etc. I am standing with the innocent people who are dying because of other people’s greed. It is a shame that we still can’t live in harmony and co-exist on this planet. We have all the necessary supplies for all of us to lead comfortable lives, share, love and be kind to each other. But unfortunately, some people do not want that. It is devastating.

Question: What is your motivational message to our followers ?

She said: Time is the most important “asset” in your life. It doesn’t really belong to you, you don’t know how much of it you have. No money, house or car can buy you time. Once it’s gone, it is gone. But, you can choose how you spend your most valuable asset. Spend it wisely.
